We all have heard of Language Barriers but has anyone every had an issue with an Accent Barrier? I am from the U.S. and my Wife is Australian. I moved here in 2008 and struggled to determine what she was saying from time to time. Certain words are hard to decipher with Aussie Accents. If you’re not aware, on most occasions the R is dropped. Example: Mirror becomes Mirrah, Beer becomes Beeh. So in keeping that in mind over the last decade it can get a bit confusing.

If you want a good giggle for the day, then read on! I promise it’s short.

My Wife and I have separate vehicles and we travel the same road in and out of work. On this particular day, however, I needed a lift into work and she would pick me up and we’d come home together. I caught a ride into work a few hours after her and when we hit a certain stretch of road that splits into a passing lane, I happened to notice a dead cat on the side of the road. Poor thing, I thought.

Later when my wife picked me up we headed back down the usual same stretch of road and when we got to the area of the passing lane section. I said to my wife:

“Did you see that dead cat?”

What I heard her say was “yeah it was a long hay (sic)”.

I said “no, it was a short-haired” I said as-a-matter-of-factly.

She replies with, “No, it was along he-eh.. Heeerrrre ” (over pronouncing the R).

Well I tell you what, I don’t think either one of us could breathe from hysterical laughter the rest of the way home!
